Assistant Nurse Manager- Supplemental Staffing

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the leadership of the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for daily operations the nursing units. Able to provide age appropriate nursing care and serve as a resource to the units patient population. Must be adaptable to a fast-paced ever-changing environment. A strong team player. Must possess exemplary customer service skills and demonstrate consistent use of EMMC Caring Behaviors. Ability to communicate well with all members of the healthcare team. Must project a professional image at all times. Responsible for holding staff accountable in maintaining compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation and Joint Commission Standards.

SUPERVISES: Any combination of the following position; Clinical Educator, Staff Nurse II, Staff Nurse I, Staff Nurse, Registered Nurse, Unit Secretary, Monitor Tech and other positions that are required to meet the operation demands of the department.


MINIMUM EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED: BLS, ACLS (if required) or obtain within 6 months. Leadership in a formal leadership role or evidenced by strong informal leadership qualities and skills. Demonstrates strong clinical skills. Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication skills, teamwork, and organizational skills. Effective collaborative, problem solving skills. Ability to manage customer complaints and staff issues effectively; develop and manage nursing staff competency requirements; and assist in the development and maintenance of departmental directives that relate to nursing process and procedure. Ability to complete a comprehensive age specific nursing care to the population of patients within the assigned unit/area. Flexibility with work hours and activities in response to unit needs.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Must possess visual acuity, hearing acuity, verbal skills, and command of the English language necessary to communicate with patients, families, physicians, external agencies and staff al all levels in the organization. Must possess manual dexterity necessary for administrative tasks such as preparing reports and departmental budgets and managing quality improvement plan. Ability to communicate in an effective and hospitable manner in person and by phone. Flexibility with work hours and activities in response to unit needs. Ability to learn basic computer skills, to identify own learning needs, to work independently, to recognize need for assistance and seek it in a timely manner, to prioritize work responsibilities and work efficiently in the face of a variety of every changing requests and demands on time. Ability to build supportive relationships with co-workers and evaluate performance of staff members. Ability to adapt to change and modify staff behaviors to meet all regulatory requirements, to adjust staffing to workflow and acuity needs of department, to follow-up or initiate disciplinary actions with goal of changing negative behaviors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Capacity to concentrate in a busy and often stressful environment. Ability to come in close contact with people. Sitting, and extended periods of standing and walking are required. Stretchers, monitors, pumps are moved several times a day to accommodate patient and equipment transfers. The nurse must be able to lift 10 lbs. with one hand to attach IV pumps to IV poles. Reaching and stretching may be required at any time. Ability to push and pull heavy computers on wheels; push wheelchairs with 300+ pound patients, frequently lifting 50 pounds without assistance; high volume of stooping, bending, lifting, pulling and twisting. The nurse must be able to stretch, reach, and retrieve equipment from the supply carts of bend to reach equipment supplied below knee level. Must possess upper body strength, agility and lung capacity necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and have the ability to wear protective equipment and to pass fit testing. Portable O2 tanks are lifted from O2 racks to stretchers to accompany patients. Must be able to perform various sensory requirements such as visual and color acuity, speech, smell, touch, manual dexterity, fine motor skills and hearing in order to assess and treat the patient accurately. Use of the electronic medical record requires visual acuity for reading information on computer screens and fine motor skills for keyboarding and use of a mouse.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Fast paced clinical environment. Participation in unit specific and hospital wide activities that promote self and staff development. Must have a high level of interpersonal and communication skills and be a demonstrated team player. Must demonstrate reliability and accountability to team members and patients.
