Position Summary
 

The Manager of Accounting oversees the general ledger accounting and reporting function.  This position is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.  This position is responsible for coordinating the timely completion of the month end close.  The Accounting Manager oversees cash management and cash processes, accounts receivable, fixed asset management, accounts payable and premium billing.  Assists the Controller and Corporate Actuary with modeling of IBNR reserves on all at-risk insurance products and self-insured medical expenses.

Responsibilities also include developing and implementing Corporate Financial Policies, oversight of all reporting requirements of the USFHP (Department of Defense) at the federal level and Generations Advantage (CMS) at the federal and state levels. 


Job Description

Key Outcomes:

Lead business financial management

Responsible for timely and accurate financial management and reporting in accordance with GAAP, Statutory Reporting and Corporate Accounting Policies.  Reporting encompasses both financial reporting to the board and monthly departmental reporting.  Responsible for all financial reports to the Board of Directors, President, CFO, External Auditors and the analysis of all accounts.  Assures that an effective internal control structure is in place to minimize organizational risk.  Responsible for ensuring appropriate and compliant accounting process documentation and work flow documentation is maintained.

Accounting Controls/Audit

Responsible for detailed financial operating structure to keep cash controls to a maximum.  All Corporate financials must follow GAAP, Statutory Reporting and Corporate Accounting policies.  Coordinates and maintains a good working relationship with our audit firm and keeps auditors informed of corporate changes, status of company, and concerns.  The position must also work closely with the outside actuary, Department of Defense and the Maine Bureau of Insurance.  Works closely with the Director of Accounting to ensure successful completion of all audits.

Develops and implements policies to ensure the operation of the Accounting Team is in compliance with company philosophy.  Interprets accounting best practices and ensures that reasonable controls are in place to create an effective control environment.  The Accounting Manager works with teams throughout Martin’s Point to coordinate and implement policies that foster a strong control environment and accurate financial reporting.

Inventory/Fixed Asset Management

Responsible for Asset Management in accordance with GAAP, Statutory Reporting and Corporate Accounting policies.  Works closely with all managers within the company regarding Asset management.  Directs physical inventory counts on an annual basis. 

Automation

Directs the enhancement of automation within the Finance department through constant analysis of current systems and implementation of improvements.  Assists in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflows of the department.

Management

Manage the performance of the Accounting team, including development and monitoring of personal performance commitments that support the operating plan. Provide timely and constructive feedback to ensure performance commitments are met and to foster continued staff growth and development. Responsible for hiring, performance management, and personal development of the Accounting Team.

Other

  • Reviews and ensures timely and accurate completion of all monthly account reconciliations
  • Assists in the compilation of information for the Company’s annual tax return
  • Assists the Director of Accounting with special projects as needed
  • Provides input into the annual budget for the Accounting Team and assures adherence to budget and other targets set by the VP Finance.

Education/Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related discipline; MBA and/or CPA preferred
  • 7+ years progressively increasing experience in Accounting
  • 3 + years of people leadership experience required
  • Management of month end close experience required
  • Public Accounting experience a plus
  • Experience coordinating and implementing policies that foster a strong control environment and accurate financial reporting required

  • Excellent computer and analytic skills
  • Experience with full risk capitation and physician practices preferred
