The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is seeking a Parent Education Professional for the Waldo County Extension Office to teach basic parenting skills to expecting and parents of children 0-3 and/or teen parents using the Parent as Teachers curriculum and Touch Points as a basis. This Maine Families program is designed to be delivered in the homes of parents (or a mutually agreed upon location) who voluntarily enroll. This Professional will serve families in Waldo County as assigned by a Program Manager. This is a full-time, fiscal year professional position contingent upon funding and successful job performance. Some essential duties and responsibilities include: Contact assigned families (referrals) in a timely manner and initiate face to face contact with parent(s) to explain the program with the goal of enrolling parents prenatally; Consult with parents to determine the level of interaction (number of parent education visits per month) desired; Design creative approaches to outreach; Assess and provide appropriate education, support and advocacy skills to assist parents in being their child s first and most effective teacher(s); Facilitate parent-child interactions, support development-centered parenting, and family well being; Support compliance with civil rights and equal opportunity guidelines to ensure that UMaine Cooperative Extension and its programs enhance the diversity of the audiences we serve and do not discriminate against any group or individual.

This Position Requires: Bachelor s degree in child development, early childhood education, human ecology, family development, social work, parent education, or a closely related field of study which must include courses in infant & child development; Effective communication using written, oral and electronic methods; Significant experience and demonstrated ability to engage parents in being their child s first teacher; Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and assess the needs of parents and young children; Proficiently communicate positive parenting skills, knowledge of prenatal, infant and early child development and ways to strengthen parent-child relationships.
