Under the supervision a Registered Professional Nurse and according to defined policies and procedures, provides clerical support to the unit. Also performs various service duties and technical tasks such as taking vital signs and assisting patients with basic hygiene and activities of daily living. Specific duties may vary by area of assignment. Consideration of the special needs and behaviors of specific patient populations is required.
THESE ARE 12 HOUR SHIFTS.
MAY REQUIRE SOME WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.
NO NEW GRADS, PLEASE.
Position Summary
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Must be certified as a Nursing Assistant by State of Maineand be on the State ofMaine Registry.
2. Interpersonal skills necessary to exchange information and maintain courteous relationships with patients, families, visitors andMedicalCenteremployees.
3. Ability to read, write and speak English in order to transcribe and communicate approved provider's orders at a level normally acquired through a high school education.
4. Basic computer skills and medical terminology recommended.
5. Knowledge of standards, policies, procedures and organizational structure of the unit, the Department of Nursing, andMaineMedicalCenter.
6. Participates in ongoing education relative to role as defined.
7. Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations.
Essential Functions
* Demonstrates the ability to effectively interact with patients, families, staff and other departments in the role of the Nursing Unit Assistant.
* Promptly responds to patient call, answers the telephone, responds to routine inquiries, routes messages, and greets and directs patients and visitors.
* Communicates with other departments to coordinate patient services (i.e. dietary, radiology), including ordering supplies as directed by departmental staff.
* Effectively utilizes intercom system, and paging system to enhance communication.
* Role models effective telephone skills.
* Assists in the orientation of other staff.
* Performs clerical duties as a Nursing Unit Assistant.
* Performs clerical and support duties such as filing, making photocopies, requisitioning and storing office supplies, including collecting area statistics and entering patient charges, and use of telecommunication devices.
* Coordinates clerical aspects of new consults, follow ups and procedures which may include retrieving and organizing medical records to ensure completeness and entering information in IMPAC according to established procedures.
* Communicates appropriately and professionally with patients, peers, and outside contacts and documents communications for follow up actions when necessary.
* Files accurately all incoming patient records and forms.
* Operates and maintains office equipment. (FAX, phone, printers, copy machine, EKG, etc.)
* Demonstrates ability to retrieve test results from outside the organization.
* Demonstrates knowledge and skill to retrieve data inSCM, Quadris, Penrad, Escription, IMPAC
* Books diagnostic xrays as requested by provider
* Performs pre cert as required prior to diagnostic exam
* Under the direction and supervision of the RN, organizes and provides basic nursing care for patients and their families.
* Performs and records various duties necessary to provide complete care within established standards, policies, and procedures, taking vital signs, collecting specimens.
* Contributes to the development of the patient plan of care under direction of the Registered Nurse.
* Communicates patient care information to other health care team members, including changes noted, by verbal report and/or documentation of patient care provided according to policy and procedure guidelines.
* Reinforces selected patient teaching initiated by Registered Nurse.
* Provides emotional support to patients and families.
* Assist in maintaining patient and unit area in a clean, orderly and safe manner.
* Assists in storing and retrieving equipment and supplies.
* Contributes to the partnership among care givers, patients and families to provide safe and effective care.
