Director, Corporate Research

General Summary

Unum has an opening for a senior marketing researcher to join our team of research professionals. This position requires substantial experience from the corporate research side and/or the supplier/consulting side and industry expertise (insurance/financial services) is preferred.

This is a high visibility position with responsibility for managing proprietary custom research for Unum s US companies (Unum US and Colonial Life). The position requires a person with an extensive market research background as well as strong consultative skills. The position reports to the VP of Corporate Research and is located in Portland, ME.

Unum s Corporate Research team partners with external research suppliers to conduct studies consistent with Unum s business objectives and to continually monitor Unum s relationships with its customers. The person in this position regularly meets with and presents to senior level managers to identify research needs, present and discuss market and customer insights, and advise on research-based recommendations.

Qualifications

* 7+ years experience in a corporate research and/or research supplier required. Insurance industry experiences a plus.
* Bachelor's degree required (Masters a plus), preferably in Business, Marketing, Marketing Research, Economics, Statistics, or Psychology/Sociology.
* A a strong working knowledge and experience in applying research design and statistics using multiple methodologies, and experienced in using statistical software (SPSS or SAS)
* Creative in identifying and utilizing new research methods.
* Ability to effectively communicate, influence, and interact with all levels of management. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, as well as presentation skills required.
* Experience in managing projects with multiple external suppliers /consultants.
* Proven ability to function in a team and high performance environment. Must be a results-oriented leader, self-motivated and self-directed.

Qualifications

* Broad business acumen, knowledge of marketing, and applied marketing research experience. Must include 7+ years experience in a corporate or supplier Research organization. Insurance industry experiences a plus.
* Bachelor's degree required (Masters a plus), preferably in Business, Marketing, Marketing Research, Economics, Statistics, or Psychology/Sociology.
* Strong customer bias - the ability to think from the outside in. Willing to go the extra mile to get the job done for the customer (internal or external).
* Proven positive influence in strategic business or marketing decisions through the practice of sound quality research.
* Strong analytical and problem solving ability. Innovative with ideas, but thorough. Ability to quickly grasp both complex concepts and the implications of recommended actions.
* Ability to effectively communicate, influence, and interact with all levels, including Senior Management. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, as well as presentation skills required.
* Ability to think and advise both strategically and tactically.
* Proven ability to successfully manage and/or coordinate multiple, concurrent projects. Ability to prioritize and execute priorities accordingly.
* Proven ability to function in a team and high performance environment. Must be a results-oriented leader, self-motivated and self-directed.
* Ability to select, develop/train, and motivate a competent staff that can meet the constant and changing research demands of the organization.
* Meets the standards for this position, as defined in the Talent Management Framework.
