Position Characteristics

The ideal leader for CORE is a physician or Ph.D./D.Sc. scientist who is nationally recognized within her or his own scientific field, as well as being knowledgeable in the broad range of health services research and health policy issues. A successful record of extramural-funded, investigator-initiated research and current research funding are essential. Competencies required of the new Director will include the ability to mentor staff and faculty, assist in developing and sustaining collaborative networks and research teams, identify funding opportunities, engage and collaborate effectively across the organization, and successfully oversee and grow CORE s research programs, service obligations, and educational programs. Important to our organization and essential qualities in the new Director are outstanding leadership skills that include a commitment to teamwork, a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, integrity, a leadership style that is engaging, transparent and respectful of others opinions and personal qualities that include modesty, empathy, and fairness.

Position Summary

Working under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Research and Director, MMCRI, the Center Director of CORE directs and oversees the health services research and other activities conducted by the faculty and staff of CORE in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MMCRI and the goals set forth by MMC. The responsibilities of the Center Director will focus on:

* Assisting the faculty and staff under her/his purview in conducting and reporting nationally recognized, novel and substantive health services research
* Ensuring that the investigative staff is successful in attracting extramural research funding
* Fostering collaborative research activities with other members of the MMC and MaineHealth community, as well as with scientists from other organizations
* In conjunction with other MMCRI center directors and education leaders, developing and promotion outstanding mentoring, training and educational programs to further the organization s research mission
* Ensuring that the resources and expertise within CORE are used to support all aspects of MMC s and MaineHealth s mission including those initiatives focused on achieving improvement in population health, reducing the cost of healthcare while enhancing the quality of care and the patient
* Providing counsel to the AVP of Research and the MMC leadership team with regards to identifying research opportunities and determining the overall direction of the Institute
* Continuing current research that will enhance the direction/vision of CORE
* The successful candidate will have an academic appointment to the Tufts University School of Medicine commensurate with experience and prior academic rank

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

1. M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree(s) or equivalent
2. Completion of post-doctoral training followed by 6 10 years of applicable experience
3. Organizational and personnel management skills, communication skills, both personal and written, business skills and a strategic planning acumen
4. Demonstrated experience in administration and the management of staff
5. Must have a working knowledge of federal regulations and compliance policy as regard to research
6. Actively follows the trends of research
7. Visual acuity, manual dexterity, math skills, and scientific acumen
8. Personal qualities of integrity, a commitment to teamwork and mentorship, honesty selflessness, modesty, empathy, openness, and fairness.
