Dean

College of Education & Human Development

The University of Maine invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Education & Human Development. The University seeks a dynamic leader who thinks in novel and strategic ways and who will work collaboratively to further develop the college.

The college is at a pivotal point in its history. Priorities include strengthening research and graduate education, fostering a first-class undergraduate educational experience, and implementing the college s commitment to diversity. The College of Education & Human Development leads the state in research that informs policy and practice for educators, child and family specialists, counselors, and educational leaders. The new dean must be a person of deep integrity who can lead and inspire faculty to prepare educators and other professionals for the twenty-first century. Commitment to academic excellence and the ability to foster and communicate a clear vision and carry out the mission of the college in cooperation with faculty are essential qualifications.

The College of Education & Human Development (http://www.umaine.edu/edhd/) offers four-year programs preparing elementary and secondary school teachers, as well as programs in child development and family relations, athletic training, exercise science, and physical education. Its many graduate programs are offered at the master s, CAS, and doctoral levels. The doctoral programs include PK-12 educational leadership, higher education, literacy, and counselor education. The College of Education & Human Development has a long and distinguished history in community-based teacher education and has been NCATE accredited since 1971.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost, the dean is the chief executive officer of the college, responsible for academic, fiscal, strategic planning, and personnel matters. The dean guides and assists in the acquisition of state, federal, and private grants; provides recommendations on all matters pertaining to college programs, personnel, and facilities; actively participates in the university s fundraising initiatives; and serves as the primary spokesperson for the college in its relations with diverse constituencies both internal and external to the University of Maine.

Founded in 1865, the University of Maine (www.umaine.edu) is the State s Land Grant and Sea Grant institution. It serves as the flagship University of the seven-member University of Maine System (www.maine.edu).

The minimal qualifications would be commensurate with appointment at full professor with tenure or significant, high-level executive administrative experience. For additional information about the College of Education & Human Development and the dean position, including suggested qualifications, go to http://www.umaine.edu/edhd/. To apply, submit a letter of interest explaining background, experience, and qualifications for the position and curriculum vitae. Screening of candidates will begin January 13, 2012 and continue until a qualified pool is identified.
