Experience in blood center phlebotomy preferred. 3.Good verbal communication skills required. 4.The ability to deal effectively with a variety of people and to maintain a pleasant attitude and behavior at all times. 5.Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required. 6.Verbal and written fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese (in specified positions) required. 7.This position is in OSHA Category I in view of the fact that it requires the incumbent to work under conditions where the potential exists for the incumbent to make contact with blood or blood components and/or human body fluids or tissue samples as a result of splashes, spills, and/or needlesticks. Job Description: Job Summary: The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of blood collection according to specified standards with consideration for the donor s care, comfort, retention and the quality of the product for the recipient. Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Performs health history by reviewing health-related questions. Performs vital signs, hemoglobin and hematocrit procedures as indicated. May refer complex health history issues to charge person. 2.Performs and complies with blood collection procedures in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Blood Services Directives (BSD s), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP s), state regulations and local protocols. Conforms to New England policies. 3.Performs phlebotomies and provides care to the donor prior to, during and after the donation. Cares for donors with reactions. 4.Uses appropriate protective measures as required. Adheres to the New England Region s SOP on biohazardous safety as well as all other assigned SOP s and practices all protective measures specified in same. 5.In specified positions, provides Spanish and/or Portuguese translation and/or interpretation services. 6.Completes Donor Registration Form and other paperwork as required. 7.Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, National Red Cross Blood Services Directives (BSD s), American Association of Blood Bank (AABB) standards, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements, and New England policies and procedures. 8.Prepares equipment at the collection site pursuant to the efficient collection of blood products. Packs equipment at the end of the collection operation to ensure its availability for the next collection operation and reports malfunctioning equipment. 9.Assists in the orientation and training of volunteers, students and new employees when requested. 10.Instructs and precepts new employees in all phases of operations at blood collection sites, including health histories and phlebotomies. 11.Performs other duties as assigned.
